How I created my website

As a person who took a website design class back in college, I give kudos to those who can build one from scratch. When I had to create my own website for my graphic design portfolio, we actually used Adobe Muse. The cool thing about Adobe Muse is that you didn’t need to know how to code it was more of a drag and drop kind of tool making it easy to build out. Unfortunately, Adobe Muse will no longer be available after March 2023.

Luckily for the times we’re in there are a bunch of websites you can use in order to make this task seamless for everyone. The top sites that I’ve personally seen people recently using are Wix, Shopify, and my favorite Sqaurespace.

In order to create a website here are the 3 main steps:

  1. Get your domain: A domain is basically the name of your site “www.domainname.com” You can usually get one from your website builder or third party sites like GoDaddy or Domain.

  2. Choose your website builder: There are many to choose from but Wix, Shopify, and Squarespace would be my recommendations. (Squarespace allows you to get your domain for free the first year ;))

  3. Pick website template: Depending on which website builder you choose, there will be many different types of templates to choose from so be sure to pick one that aligns with your business.

Wix is great for those who really want to customize their sites to the best of their vision. My only thing with Wix personally is the way the sites look on your phone. This does depend on how fancy you want your site but just keep this in mind. (This is important because a lot of your traffic will be looking at your site from their phones) Also people compare Wix being like an android, do what you’d like with that information.

Shopify is great for e-commerace businesses, so those who are strictly selling to consumers. I haven’t personally tried it out but they have big brands using them like GymShark, Telfar, and Kylie. I’ve heard good things about Shopify and apparently you can use them for free in a 3-day trial to check it out.

Then there’s Squarespace which I truly love. Squarespace already has templates you can use and customize as you like. For me, things that are simple are best especially to be looked at from your phone. We as a society are moving so fast we don’t really have time to be scrolling forever and would like to find things quickly. I appreciate Squarespace for that and honestly their aesthetics is top-notch. They also allow you to have your own customized email address and help send out emails to your audience which is great and much needed.

If you made it this far, here are some discounts to use these website builders:

  • Wix: there’s a 50% off sale going on right now! (ends in 23 hours which will be on January 12, 2023)

  • Shopify: 3 months of Shopify for $1/month on select plans

  • Squarespace: there’s always at least a 10% off discount using this code GIMME10 and 50% off for students!
